Mr. John Matula has been a part of the leadership team at Alvin Community College since August of 2016. A fifth generation Texan, Mr. Matula holds a Master of Science and Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. Mr. Matula began his tenure at Alvin as an Anatomy and Physiology instructor in 2005. He has advanced his career since that time serving as Lead Biology Faculty, Sciences Department Chair, and Dean of Arts and Sciences. He was chosen to be the Vice President of Student Services and the SACSCOC Institutional Accreditation Liaison in the Spring of 2022. In 2017, Mr. Matula was awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation to improve undergraduate STEM education at community colleges. He is a two-time Teacher of the Year at Alvin and is a John & Suanne Roueche Excellence Award winner. He draws his inspiration and motivation from the student-teacher dynamic, a relationship in which knowledge impacts the future. Mr. Matula believes that the challenge of the classroom teacher is not only to deliver content, but also to open minds to new possibilities and new ways of thinking about the world we live in. He hopes to bring his experience as an instructional Dean to improve support services for all students. “We set sail on this new sea because there is new knowledge to be gained, and new rights to be won, and they must be won and used for the progress of all people.”– John F.
