Dr. Kinney received his Associate of Arts from Coffeyville Community College in Coffeyville, Kansas; his Bachelor of Business Administration in Management from Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas; a Master of Science in Higher Education Administration from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas; and a Doctor of Education in Leadership and Higher Education Administration from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Dr. Kinney and his wife reside in Council Bluffs. They have two children (Page Wiese and Rylee Kinney) and one grandson (Tate Wiese).
